Growing up in Maine and having packed for trips "home" for the past 15+ years, here are the must-pack items I recommend—whether you're renting a cabin on a lake, heading to Acadia National Park, or anywhere in between!
Layers are essential so you're prepared for anything from chilly to hot temperatures—sometimes in the same day! August is usually warm (and CAN be hot and humid at times), but it could also be cool, especially in the evening or out on the water.
AVERAGE AUG TEMP: 60° – 80° F
If you don’t like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes. ”

If you're planning outdoor adventures in Acadia or a state park, a good local map is helpful. And for adventures around the state, there's no map that does it better than the DeLorme Maine Atlas (every Mainer north of Portland has one!).
If you'll be doing anything outdoors, bug repellant is a MUST for ticks, black flies, and mosquitoes.
While exact dates can vary based on the year, August is generally Maine wild blueberry season! Wild blueberries grow in many places all over Maine, and especially around Acadia and Downeast. You'll be glad you packed reusable baggies or containers for hikes!
AVERAGE SEASON: late July - August
